What the client wanted

The owners of a four-bedroom detached house in Sevenoaks wanted their lighting to work the way the rest of their home did — from their phones, by voice, and automatically. Warm, dim light in the evenings; bright, cool light in the kitchen at breakfast; the garden lit when guests arrived; everything off with one instruction at night.

Just as importantly, the house was finished and furnished. They didn't want walls chased, ceilings re-plastered or weeks of dust — which ruled out the traditional hard-wired automation systems and pointed to a smart scheme built on wireless-controlled dimming.

The scheme we designed

We designed the house into twelve lighting zones — kitchen, dining, living room, snug, hallway and landing, four bedrooms, bathrooms and garden — each dimmable and controllable individually or in scenes. Existing fittings were replaced with over seventy dimmable LEDs, including new downlights in the kitchen and bathrooms and feature pendants in the dining room.

Control combines smart relay modules behind the existing switch positions with a central hub, so the physical switches still work exactly as guests expect — but every zone is also available from the app, from programmed schedules, and by voice. Scenes were configured with the family: 'Morning', 'Cooking', 'Movie', 'Guests' and 'All Off'.

Outside, we installed a new garden lighting circuit — wall lanterns, path lights and tree uplighters on their own zone, scheduled to follow sunset and controllable from the same app. All of it wired, contained and certified to BS 7671 like any other circuit we install.

The Result

The installation was completed in four days with no re-plastering and no redecorating — the finished house stayed finished. Every circuit alteration was tested and certified, with the paperwork self-certified through our NAPIT registration.

The result is a home where the lighting quietly does the right thing at the right time — and a family who now ask us about heating controls and EV charging, which is usually how smart home projects go.
